“I’m not mad at you. It’s just…” He runs his hands through his hair. “There was something I had planned to do today.”

I don’t say anything. I just look at him. He looks at me. One minute we are standing there and the next he’s pulled me to him and his lips are on mine. I raise my eyebrows in surprise. Nix is kissing me! I can’t believe this is real.

He pulls back and smiles at me. “I have been wanting to do that all summer.”

“Alex!” My mom’s voice is louder.

“I gotta go.” I turn and run across the street. Minutes later we are pulling out of the driveway. My eyes meet with Nix’s as we drive out of the neighborhood. He looks hurt. I am kicking myself inside. I should have kissed him back. I should have told him how I felt. I told myself I would make sure I told him once we were back. Little did I know I wouldn’t have the chance anytime soon.
