Forgoing every nice Southern lady manner drilled into her, Madeline shoved the men aside and watched a silhouette stumble down the stairs. The arms were wrapped around something close to the chest.
A heavy boot hit the ground, then another, when he collapsed to his knees and the other firefighters came running. The woman helped to pry the mask off his face, the whole surface black as death. They fought against the buckles, the man tipping back.
Please, for once in your damn existence be merciful, oh Lord…
Everett gasped for air in the smoke-stained night.
